Summer Cycling: How to Ride Your Bike in Hot Weather

For those of you who have been cycling for some time now, you probably know that doing so in summer can be a bit more difficult than usual. The scorching weather can even make you want to stay off the bike altogether! You don’t have to do that, however, because there are simple ways to keep cool on your bike.

As the temperatures rise and the heat and humidity take their toll, make sure to follow these tips – not only can you beat the heat and ride longer, but you can also stay safe and have fun:


Always plan a route ahead of time. If you are riding with others, then make sure they know where you are going. Choose routes with some shade as well as convenient places to stop for hydration. Do not forget to bring your cell phone and some cash in case you would need extra fluids for potential emergency situations.


If you want to have colder water longer, you may freeze your water bottles overnight. As you ride, the ice will melt, offering you cold water along the way. Too warm water is not so refreshing. Just a reminder: don’t fill your water bottles more than ¾ full. Doing so can make your bottles burst as it expands while freezing.


You can always start earlier than usual. Get up before the sun so you don’t ride during the hottest parts of the day (usually between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.). Microfiber clothing will stay cooler and wick sweat away – make sure you are dressed appropriately. Silk and cotton clothing are definitely a no-no. You may also want to avoid wearing black-colored tees. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Should you experience a technical difficulty, do your best to find a shady spot to work on.


You may want to start out with rides shorter in length. This is not the perfect time to race so make sure you maintain a moderate pace. As your body becomes used to riding in the heat, this is the time you can increase your mileage. Little by little, you will also be able to increase your rides in length and intensity.


Before you even get on your bike, make sure that you drink water first. Replacing electrolytes is important during your ride so make sure you drink water even if you are not thirsty. Even if you are planning for a short ride, make sure you carry plenty of fluids – it’s better to have too much than too little in this type of situation. To stay on top of your hydration needs, you can take in small amounts of fluids frequently, about every 5 to 10 minutes.
